If you are experiencing wisdom tooth pain or have been advised that your wisdom teeth may need to be removed, contact Ararat Family Dental. Our dentists can assess your teeth, explain your options and help make the process as safe and comfortable as possible.
Wisdom teeth commonly emerge during the late teenage years or early adulthood, often between the ages of 17 and 25. For some people, there is not enough space at the back of the mouth for these teeth to come through properly.
When wisdom teeth become impacted or partly erupted, they may cause pain, swelling, inflammation, infection, decay or damage to nearby teeth. In these cases, removal may be recommended to prevent further problems.
Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. Your dentist will assess the position of the tooth, your symptoms and any risks before recommending the most appropriate treatment. Some patients may choose to have wisdom teeth removed before they cause significant issues, particularly if X-rays show they are likely to create problems later.
During wisdom tooth removal, we use appropriate anaesthetic options to help keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. The process will vary depending on the position of the tooth, whether it has fully emerged and whether it is impacted.
In some cases, removal is relatively straightforward. In more complex cases, a small amount of bone may need to be removed or the tooth may need to be sectioned before extraction. Before any treatment begins, we will explain what is involved, what to expect and how to prepare.
After your procedure, we will provide clear after-care instructions to help manage discomfort, reduce the risk of complications and support proper healing. Depending on the type of anaesthetic or sedation used, you may need someone to take you home afterwards, as you may feel drowsy or unfit to drive.
