The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a Medicare-based program that helps eligible families access basic dental care for children and teenagers. The scheme may cover part or all of the cost of selected dental services for eligible children aged 0 to 17.
Under the CDBS, eligible children may be able to claim up to a capped amount over two consecutive calendar years. For children whose two-year period starts in 2026, the current cap is up to $1,158. This amount is indexed and may change, so families should confirm the latest details through Services Australia before treatment.
The CDBS is designed to support children from families receiving certain Australian Government payments. To be eligible, a child generally needs to be aged 0 to 17 for at least one day of the calendar year, be eligible for Medicare, and receive an eligible payment, or have a parent, carer or guardian who receives an eligible payment.
There may be limits or restrictions on some services, so it is important to check your child’s eligibility and available balance before treatment begins.
The CDBS does not cover every type of dental treatment. Services that are generally not covered include:
Orthodontic treatment, such as braces or Invisalign
Cosmetic dental treatment, such as teeth whitening or veneers
Dental services provided in a hospital
Treatment already claimed through private health insurance also cannot usually be claimed again through the CDBS for the same service.
